Safe Driving in NYC

So what’s the first thing people notice when they come to visit New York City? Is it the breathtaking skyline, the beauty of Central Park, or maybe the glitz and glam of Times Square? Maybe, but I’m willing to bet there’s something else even MORE noticeable than the above things give up? It’s the TRAFFIC!

New York City is known worldwide for its jam-packed streets and complicated road signage. If this is your first time driving a New York City rental car you may want to check out AAMCAR’s Getting Around NYC page for tips on how to deal with rush hour traffics and intersections. If you’re looking for some more safety hints on keeping your cool while driving in NYC look no further; we at AAMCAR understand that safety is important to our New York City rental car customers so we’ve taken the time to amass a bit of helpful advice for our visiting drivers.

  1. Buckle Up!
Seatbelts were put in cars for a reasons people, so be sure to take advantage of that. Be sure to buckle up and make sure that all of your passengers are strapped in safely too. In the unlikely case of an accident you’ll be glad you did!
  2. Watch out for Taxicabs!
New York is literally CLOGGED with these yellow roadhogs. Even though they’re entitled to the same laws as you and I, they don’t always act like it. So be sure to always yield and let them go ahead even though you may not always want to.
  3. Turn on your Headlights!
Be sure to turn the headlights of your New York car rental on once dusk has fallen. This will help both your visibility and the visibilities of others on the road. Plus it’s the law.
  4. Don’t Gridlock the Flow of Traffic!
Blocking the flow of traffic is by far one of the most common problems when driving in NYC. When you’re approaching an intersection don’t continue through the light unless you are positive that you can make it completely through in time. If there is already a back up of cars in the intersection, please don’t fall in behind; stop behind the road markings and wait for the next light. Many accidents can be avoided by simply exercising patience.
  5. Don’t Open Your Car Windows to Strangers!
New York, just like any other big city, is full of roadside window washers and other entrepreneurs. Although it’s difficult to say no to these people it’s just safer to keep the doors locked and windows rolled up on your New York car rental. Not all the people who approach your car do it out of the best intentions.
  6. The Art of Parking!
Finding a safe spot to park your New York car rental is relatively easy if you know the simple rules to follow
  • Be sure to park near a source of light; this could be a street lamp, or a store front. Studies have show that cars parked in lighted areas are less likely to be chosen as a potential target.
  • Make sure that all valuables are out of sight within the car. Don’t leave any of your days shopping sitting in the backseat or your purse on the dashboard. Thieves are looking for easy smash and grab targets so don’t become a statistic.
  • Lock your doors and roll up your windows! It may sound pretty self apparent but lots of people for one reason or another, often forget this obvious safety feature. So make sure to take a moment before you head up to your hotel room to double check your New York car rental. A few extra seconds to walk around your car can save you lots of pain in the future.

Century 21 is famous for having deeply discounted designer merchandise and interestingly, was featured on an episode of Sex and the City. The store was established over 40 years ago. Over the years it has developed a reputation for fine merchandise and top-notch customer service.

It is also one of New York’s best-kept secrets, although the secret is out now that it survived the attacks on the World Trade Center.

World Trade Center

The World Trade Center was built in the late 1960s and was completed in 1970. The center attracted a wide variety of tenants, although not all were involved in “world trade”. In the 1980s there was a resurgence of the center and many Wall Street tenants moved in.

The first major attack on the World Trade Center was in 1993 where a Ryder truck with 1500 pounds of explosives were planted and detonated in an underground parking garage of the North Tower. It destroyed 4 sublevels of concrete, killed six people, and injured over 1000. Many people were forced to walk down dark stairwells with no emergency lighting. Some took hours to reach safety. After this happened, safety lights were installed and are believed to have saved many lives in the September 11th attacks. The people who were responsible for these acts were convicted in 1997 and 1998 and are serving life sentences in prison. It was thought that they wanted to send the North Tower crashing into the South Tower, destroying both.

Shook struck once again in September 2001. The morning started like any other beautiful September morning, with people going to work. Five years later there is a rebuilding of these towers and the spirit that they embodied. The World Trade Center Memorial is open here, and is a great place to visit with your New York car rental.

Century 21 is a must-see on your list of things to do with your New York car rental. You will not leave disappointed by the great discounts and products you will find here. New York Car Rentals and the Castle Clinton National Monument

A fortress of fantastic proportions is currently located at the southern most tip of Manhattan Island. Designed to keep people out, this beautiful building now welcomes millions of visitors in. So what’s so special about this New York City attraction? Well for starters – it’s a castle! A stroll through Battery Park will bring you face-to-face with Manhattan’s very own palace: Castle Clinton. A product of the Napoleonic era, Castle Clinton is now one of the city’s most picturesque attractions, rising high above the neighboring park landscape. Named in honor of former New York City Mayor and late governor of New York State, Dewitt Clinton, the castle represents not only the growth of a city, but also the growth of a nation. Beautifully restored and wonderfully maintained, Castle Clinton now functions as an outdoor event’s establishment and historical icon. You can’t completely appreciate how far NYC has come without revisiting a little of the city’s past, so why not plan to visit Clinton Castle during your upcoming New York car rentals vacation? More than 200 years of history are housed inside the walls of this fortress, making for one exciting afternoon adventure.

Protecting New York City: Castle Clinton and its original function

Castle Clinton is the direct product of the conflict which raged between France and Great Britain during the Napoleonic era. During this time the English made a conscious effort to seize American ships and impress their seamen into the British Navy. This conflict climaxed in 1807 when the British openly attacked the Chesapeake American frigate. The fear of further attacks would quickly prompt the virtually defenseless city of NYC to fortify its surroundings. Five forts were quickly built, including what was then known as the South-west Battery Fortress. Circular in shape, the South-west Battery Fortress originally stood in about 35 feet of water, more than 200 feet from shore. A drawbridge was used to connect the fort to mainland Manhattan. Completed in 1881, the South-west Battery Fortress never saw battle, though the guns stood ready during the war of 1812. By the end of the war the fortress had transformed from a military base into a military headquarters. The name was also changed in honor of Mayor DeWitt, and ceded to the City of New York. Since then the castle has function as a place of public entertainment, an immigrant landing depot and the temporary site of the New York Aquarium.

Travel back in time with a visit to Castle Clinton

Castle Clinton is now recognized as a national monument due to its historical importance. Walls from the original 1811 fortress remain intact at the site, while the interior has been completely renovated by recent generations. Customers of AAMCAR New York Car Rentals are encouraged to begin their vacation with a visit to this innovative historical site, as it now functions as a visitor’s center for the national parks of Manhattan. Tours illustrate the colorful history of the castle as well as its cultural significance. Tours are performed by park rangers dressed in 1812 military garb. Customers of AAMCAR New York Car Rentals are also encouraged to visit the onsite bookstore and information desk for more information about local park happenings and events.
