A Lost Legend

Numerous factors contributed to the eventual demolition of Pennsylvania Station, the two largest of which included financial struggles and real estate value. The company enrolls 350 aspiring dances from every state in the nation and the world. Up until the death of Balachine’s death in 1983, Robbins and Peter Martins shared the title of Ballet Masters in Chief overseeing the operations of the New York City Ballet. In 1990, Martins took sole responsibility in overseeing the company’s operations. In 2001, the position of Resident Choreographer of New York City Ballet was created and Chirstopher Wheeldon became the first person to hold this title.

The New York Ballet has employed several great performers including Jacques d’Amboise, Maria Tallchief, Diana Adams, Edward Villella, Melissa Hayden, Jillana, Gelsey Kirkland, Conrad Ludlow, Suzanne Farrell, Allegra Kent, Heather Watts, Tanaquil LeClerq, Darci Kistler, Peter Martins and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Currently, the artistic director of the New York City Ballet is peter Martins.
